The Welsh Language Charter

The Siarter Iaith (Welsh Language Charter) is a national framework for all settings and schools to provide a holistic basis for planning experiences across the curriculum in order to increase learners’ use of Welsh and develop their confidence in the language. It supports increased opportunities for learners to speak Welsh in a variety of contexts and embed their use of Welsh language patterns from an early age. The principles set out in the Siarter Iaith are in keeping with the Curriculum for Wales 2022 guidance.

We want to inspire children and young people to use Welsh in all aspects of their lives. The Siarter Iaith is for everyone; all members of the school community have a part to play, the school council, learners, workforce, parents, carers, governors and the wider community. This will ensure every school has full ownership of their Siarter Iaith. Together we will increase the social use of Welsh by children and young people.

Welsh-medium and bilingual primary schools across Wales are implementing the Siarter Iaith and there are other programmes for:

The objective of the Siarter Iaith Cymraeg Campus is to provide a clear framework, which can be used to promote and increase the use of Welsh by children in a whole school context. The Siarter Iaith Cymraeg Campus’ main aim is to promote a strong Welsh ethos in schools and to provide a range of enriching activities that propel the children to enjoy learning Welsh.

The Siarter Iaith Cymraeg Campus is for everyone; all members of the school community have a part to play, the school council, learners, workforce, parents, carers, governors and the wider community. The Welsh Government recognises the importance of the Siarter Iaith (Welsh Charter) programme as a key resource for increasing children and young people’s use of Welsh.

100% of Wrexham’s English medium primary schools are committed to the Siarter Iaith Cymraeg Campus and they’re all on their journey to complete the Bronze, Silver or Gold Award.
